Boeing strike ends as workers accept new contract
Machinists union members voted to ratify a new contract with Boeing, ending a nearly two-month strike that had idled production of the company's 737 Max jet.
The new contract includes a 12% pay raise over three years, as well as improved benefits and working conditions. Workers will return to work on Monday, January 23.
The strike began on October 1, 2022, after union members rejected Boeing's initial contract offer. The main sticking points were wages and benefits, with the union demanding a larger pay raise and better healthcare coverage.
Boeing had warned that the strike could have a significant impact on its business, as the 737 Max is one of its most important aircraft. The company estimated that the strike was costing it about $1 billion per week.
The new contract was reached after several weeks of negotiations between Boeing and the union. The union said that the new contract is a "fair and equitable" deal for its members.
Boeing said that it is "pleased" that the strike has ended and that it is "looking forward to getting our employees back to work and building airplanes again."
