Daniel Edelman scored the game-tying goal in regulation and Carlos Coronel made three saves in the shootout as the New York Red Bulls defeated the Columbus Crew 3-2 in a shootout to complete a two-game sweep of the defending MLS Cup champions in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday night.
The Red Bulls will face the New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The first leg of that series will be played on Sunday, Nov. 20 at Red Bull Arena.
Edelman's goal came in the 88th minute, just moments after the Crew had taken a 2-1 lead on a goal by Lucas Zelarayan. Edelman's goal sent the game to extra time, and Coronel made three saves in the shootout to give the Red Bulls the victory.
Coronel, who was making his first MLS playoff start, made saves on attempts by Zelarayan, Artur and Aidan Morris in the shootout. Edelman, Lewis Morgan and John Tolkin scored for the Red Bulls in the shootout.
The Red Bulls controlled much of the possession in the game, but the Crew had the better chances. The Crew outshot the Red Bulls 17-7 and had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Red Bulls took the lead in the 32nd minute on a goal by Caden Clark. The Crew tied the game in the 55th minute on a goal by Zelarayan, and the game remained tied until Edelman's goal in the 88th minute.
The Red Bulls are now 2-0 in the playoffs this season. The Crew are 0-2.
