Early Life and Basketball Career

Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo, known as Dikembe Mutombo, was born on June 25, 1966, in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His father was a schoolteacher, and his mother was a homemaker. Mutombo began playing basketball at a young age and quickly developed a reputation as a defensive force. He attended Georgetown University, where he played for the Hoyas basketball team from 1988 to 1991. Mutombo was a three-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year and was named a consensus First Team All-American in his senior year.

NBA Career

Mutombo was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the fourth overall pick in the 1991 NBA draft. He spent five seasons with the Nuggets before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks in 1996. Mutombo played for the Hawks for two seasons before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1998. He spent eight seasons with the 76ers and was named an NBA All-Star eight times. Mutombo also led the NBA in blocked shots five times. In 2001, Mutombo was traded to the New Jersey Nets, where he spent two seasons. He finished his NBA career with the Houston Rockets in 2009.
