How to stay safe and healthy during a wildfire
Before a wildfire
There are a few things you can do to prepare for a wildfire before it happens.
- Make an evacuation plan and practice it with your family.
- Assemble an emergency kit that includes food, water, first aid supplies, and important documents.
- Clear brush and other flammable materials away from your home.
- Create a defensible space around your home by removing dead trees and shrubs.
- Install smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in your home.
During a wildfire
If you are caught in a wildfire, there are a few things you can do to stay safe.
- Evacuate immediately if you are told to do so.
- If you can't evacuate, stay indoors and close all windows and doors.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a wet cloth to protect yourself from smoke.
- Turn off all gas and electricity.
- Stay informed about the fire by listening to the radio or watching TV.
After a wildfire
After a wildfire, there are a few things you can do to stay safe and healthy.
- Avoid areas that have been burned.
- Wear a mask if you are exposed to smoke.
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- If you have any health problems, be sure to see your doctor.
