Iowa weather: Rainy start to the week
Showers and thunderstorms likely Monday, Tuesday
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for much of Iowa, with showers and thunderstorms likely Monday and Tuesday.
The storms are expected to bring heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds. Some areas could see hail and even tornadoes.
The NWS advises residents to be prepared for severe weather and to have a plan in place in case of a tornado warning.
Here are some tips for staying safe during a tornado:
- Have a plan for where you will go if a tornado warning is issued.
- Identify a sturdy building or underground shelter where you can take cover.
- Stay away from windows and doors.
- If you are outside, lie down in a ditch or other low-lying area and cover your head with your hands.
The NWS also advises residents to be aware of the risk of flooding. Heavy rain can cause rivers and streams to overflow their banks, and flash flooding can occur even in areas that are not typically prone to flooding.
If you must drive during the storm, be sure to slow down and use caution. Be aware of the risk of hydroplaning, and never drive through flooded areas.
