Early Life and Education

Jimmy Carter was born in Plains, Georgia, on October 1, 1924. He grew up on a peanut farm and attended Georgia Southwestern College and the United States Naval Academy. After graduating from Annapolis in 1946, he served as a submariner in the Navy until 1953.

Carter entered politics in 1962, when he was elected to the Georgia State Senate. He served as governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. In 1976, he was elected president of the United States, defeating incumbent Gerald Ford.
