Julian Cyr Jumps Into State Senate Race on Cape Cod
Local Democratic State Representative announces bid for embattled state senate seat
Cyr says he is seeking higher office to help address the climate crisis, improve transportation, and make healthcare more affordable.
Cyr, a Truro Democrat, announced his candidacy for the Cape and Islands state senate seat currently held by Republican Sen. Vinny deMacedo in a video posted to social media on Tuesday, March 7th, 2023.
"I'm running for state senate because we need a leader who will fight for the people of Cape Cod and the Islands," Cyr said in his announcement video. "We need someone who will stand up for our values and fight for our future. I'm that leader and I'm asking for your vote."
Cyr, 38, is a lifelong resident of Cape Cod. He is a graduate of Nauset Regional High School, UMass Amherst, and Boston College Law School.
Before being elected to the state house in 2020, Cyr served on the Truro board of selectmen and the Cape Cod Commission.
In the state house, Cyr has been a vocal advocate for climate change mitigation, affordable housing, and criminal justice reform.
Cyr's entry into the race makes him the second Democrat to challenge deMacedo, who is seeking a third term in the state senate.
Falmouth Democrat Paul Santos announced his candidacy for the seat in January.
The Cape and Islands state senate district includes Barnstable, Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee, Sandwich, and parts of Plymouth and Yarmouth.
