Kyle Filipowski has never lost this much, but he's seeing the small victories amid Jazz's 0-6 start
Jazz’s 6-foot-11 forward still getting accustomed to college basketball, but keeping perspective
Filipowski turned 19 in June and is playing 30 minutes per game for the first time in his life.
The Chicago native is making up for lost time with a strong start to his college career, averaging 15.2 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. But it’s been a tough adjustment for him and the Jazz, who are off to an 0-6 start.
“It’s definitely been a challenge,” Filipowski said. “I’ve never lost this much in my life. But I’m trying to stay positive and focus on the small victories.”
One of those victories came in the Jazz’s last game, a 78-66 loss to BYU. Filipowski had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and he was a force on the defensive end. He also hit a key 3-pointer in the second half that gave the Jazz a brief lead.
“That was a good feeling,” Filipowski said. “I’m just trying to do my part to help the team win. I know we’ll get there eventually.”
Jazz coach Tommy Lloyd is encouraged by what he’s seen from Filipowski so far. He knows it’s going to take some time for the freshman to adjust to the college game, but he’s confident that Filipowski has the potential to be a star.
“He’s a special player,” Lloyd said. “He’s got a lot of talent and he’s a great kid. We’re going to be patient with him and we’re going to help him reach his full potential.”
Filipowski came to Arizona as one of the most decorated recruits in school history. He was the No. 1 player in the state of Illinois and a McDonald’s All-American. But he’s had to make some adjustments to his game since arriving in Tucson.
“The biggest thing is just the speed of the game,” Filipowski said. “It’s so much faster than high school. I’m still getting used to it, but I’m starting to feel more comfortable.”
Filipowski has also had to adjust to playing a different position. He was a power forward in high school, but he’s playing center for the Jazz. He’s still learning the нюансы of the position, but he’s making progress.
“I’m still learning how to play center,” Filipowski said. “But I’m getting better every day. I’m just trying to do my part to help the team win.”
