LIVE UPDATES: No. 19 Texas opens the season in Las Vegas
Longhorns face Nevada in season opener
No. 19 Texas opens the 2023 college football season on Saturday, Aug. 26, against Nevada in Las Vegas. The game will be played at Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, and will be televised on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. CT.
Texas is coming off a 10-4 season in 2022, which included a win over No. 5 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. The Longhorns are led by quarterback Quinn Ewers, who is expected to make his first start for Texas.
Nevada went 8-5 last season, including a win over No. 25 Fresno State. The Wolf Pack are led by quarterback Nate Cox, who threw for 3,161 yards and 26 touchdowns last season.
What to watch for
Here are some things to watch for in the Texas-Nevada game:
- Quinn Ewers' debut: Ewers is one of the most highly-touted quarterback recruits in recent memory, and he is expected to make his first start for Texas on Saturday. How will he perform in his first game as a Longhorn?
- Texas' defense: Texas' defense was one of the most improved units in the country last season, and it will be tested by a Nevada offense that averaged 32.3 points per game last year.
- The home-field advantage: Texas will be playing in front of a large crowd at Allegiant Stadium, which will be the first time the Longhorns have played in Las Vegas since 1998.
Prediction
Texas is a 17-point favorite over Nevada, according to VegasInsider.com. The Longhorns should be able to win this game, but it will not be easy. Nevada has a solid offense, and they will be playing at home. However, Texas is the more talented team, and they should be able to pull out the victory.
