Matt Painter Provides Redshirt Clarity; Uncertainty
Uncertainty Remains for Mason Gillis
Matt Painter delivered clarity on redshirts on Thursday afternoon, but a haze of uncertainty still surrounds Mason Gillis.
Painter declared Trey Kaufman, Caleb Furst and Jaden Ivey will make use of their extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will return for the 2023-24 campaign. Painter also said Gillis has yet to make a decision on his future and could transfer or return to West Lafayette.
Kaufman's and Furst's Returns Bolster Frontcourt
The return of Kaufman and Furst gives Purdue a formidable frontcourt. Kaufman was a key reserve for the Boilermakers last season, averaging 5.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, while Furst was a breakout star, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors after averaging 12.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest.
With Zach Edey testing the NBA waters, Gillis' return would give Purdue a strong trio down low. However, if he transfers, Painter will need to look elsewhere to fill the void.
Ivey's Return Adds Backcourt Stability
Ivey's decision to return is a major boost for Purdue's backcourt. The 6-foot-4 guard was a breakout star for the Boilermakers last season, averaging 17.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
With Ivey back, Purdue will have one of the most dynamic backcourts in the country, with him and senior point guard Braden Smith leading the way.
Gillis' Decision Still Uncertain
All eyes will be on Gillis as he weighs his options in the coming weeks. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 6.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game last season but saw his playing time dwindle late in the year.
If Gillis transfers, he would have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules, but he would be eligible to play in 2024-25. If he returns to Purdue, he could compete for a starting spot or be a valuable reserve.
Purdue's Roster Outlook
With Kaufman, Furst and Ivey all returning, Purdue is in a good position heading into next season. The Boilermakers have a strong nucleus of experienced players, and they should be a contender in the Big Ten and nationally.
However, the Gillis situation adds a bit of uncertainty to the outlook. If he transfers, Purdue will have to find another big man to fill the void, and that could be a challenge.
