Mexico legend sent off for spitting at referee during MLS match
Former El Tri captain Rafael Marquez shown red card in LA Galaxy defeat
Marquez's actions came after he was booked for dissent
Former Mexico captain Rafael Marquez was sent off for spitting at a referee during the LA Galaxy's 2-0 defeat to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday.
Marquez, 39, was booked for dissent in the 65th minute of the match at BC Place Stadium.
He then spat at referee Ismail Elfath, who immediately showed him a red card.
It was the first red card of Marquez's MLS career.
The incident overshadowed a disappointing performance from the Galaxy, who have now lost three of their last four matches.
Marquez is one of Mexico's most decorated players, having won over 140 caps for his country and played in four World Cups.
He joined the Galaxy in 2018 after spending the previous season with Atlas in his native Mexico.
Marquez is expected to face a suspension from MLS for his actions.
