Michigan State Opens Season on Monday Night, Hosting Monmouth at the Breslin Center
Spartans Return Home After Season-Opening Loss
The Michigan State Spartans will open their 2022-23 season on Monday night when they host the Monmouth Hawks at the Breslin Center. The Spartans are coming off a disappointing season-opening loss to the Gonzaga Bulldogs in Spokane, Washington.
The Spartans will be looking to bounce back from their loss to Gonzaga and start the season on a positive note. They will be facing a Monmouth team that is coming off a 16-16 season in 2021-22.
Spartans Boast Talented Roster
The Spartans have been led by All-American forward Joey Hauser and point guard A.J. Hoggard. Hauser, a 6-foot-9 junior, is one of the best shooters in the country. Hoggard, a 6-foot-2 junior, is a dynamic playmaker who can also score. The Spartans also have a number of other talented players, including senior forward Malik Hall, senior guard Tyson Walker, and sophomore forward Jaden Akins.
The Spartans were ranked No. 20 in the preseason AP Top 25 poll but fell out of the rankings after their loss to Gonzaga. They will be looking to get back into the rankings with a win over Monmouth.
Monmouth Seeking Upset
The Hawks are a mid-major team that plays in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. They are led by junior guard George Papas, who is one of the best shooters in the MAAC. Papas, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 15.4 points per game last season.
The Hawks also have a number of other talented players, including senior forward Myles Foster, senior guard Walker Miller, and sophomore guard Deion Hammond. The Hawks will be looking to upset the Spartans and start the season with a big win.
