'Mini tornado' sweeps across Brisbane River as Queensland is battered by wild thunderstorms and huge hail
Queensland is being battered by a series of wild thunderstorms, with a 'mini tornado' captured on film sweeping across the Brisbane River
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for much of south-east Queensland, with heavy rainfall, large hail and damaging winds expected
The 'mini tornado' was captured on film by a resident of Kangaroo Point, who said it was "the craziest thing I've ever seen".
The Bureau of Meteorology said the 'mini tornado' was a waterspout, which is a tornado that forms over water.
The severe thunderstorm warning is in place for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, South West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Maranoa and Warrego, and parts of the Central West, North West and South East districts.
The Bureau of Meteorology is urging people to take shelter indoors and avoid driving through floodwaters.
The wild thunderstorms are the result of a low-pressure system that is moving over Queensland.
The Bureau of Meteorology said the low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, large hail and damaging winds to much of south-east Queensland.
The Bureau of Meteorology is urging people to stay informed about the latest weather warnings and to take precautions to stay safe.
Here are some tips to stay safe during a thunderstorm:
- Stay indoors and away from windows.
- Avoid driving through floodwaters.
- If you are caught outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle.
- Stay away from trees and power lines.
- Listen to the radio or television for updates on the storm.
