What to expect from the weather this afternoon
After a dry start, there is a risk of showers and storms this afternoon. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for much of the country, warning of potential flooding and travel disruption. The warning is in place from 2pm until 8pm.
The showers are expected to be heavy and could bring hail and thunder. The Met Office advises people to stay indoors if possible during the warning period.
What to do if you're caught in a storm
If you're caught in a storm, the Met Office advises that you should:
- Take shelter in a sturdy building or indoors
- Avoid open water and exposed areas
- Stay away from trees and power lines
- If you're driving, pull over and stop in a safe place
- If you're on foot, seek shelter in a building or under a bridge
How to stay safe during a flood
If you're in an area that is at risk of flooding, the Environment Agency advises that you should:
- Move to higher ground
- Avoid driving through flood water
- Be aware of the dangers of electricity and gas
- Turn off your gas and electricity supply if it is safe to do so
- Stay away from flood water, as it can be contaminated
