Dr. Blackburn holds a Ph.D. in English from Emory University, a Master of Divinity from Duke University Divinity School, and a Bachelor of Arts from Furman University. His research and teaching interests include 19th-century American literature, the literature of the American South, and the intersection of faith and culture.

Prior to joining Montreat College, Dr. Blackburn served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. During his tenure, he led the development and implementation of a comprehensive academic plan, oversaw significant faculty growth and development initiatives, and enhanced the university's academic reputation.
