New York Red Bulls Defy Odds to Deny Columbus Crew Repeat: "The Season is Not Over"
Late rally stuns Crew faithful
Daniel Edelman scores dramatic equalizer in waning seconds
HARRISON, N.J. - Caden Clark scored a goal in the 89th minute on Sunday to help the New York Red Bulls earn a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew at Red Bull Arena. The Crew, who clinched the Eastern Conference regular-season title last week, took the lead in the 65th minute on a goal from Lucas Zelarayan.
The Red Bulls controlled possession throughout the match and finally broke through in the dying minutes. Daniel Edelman took a pass from Cristian Cásseres Jr. and fired a shot from distance that beat Crew goalkeeper Eloy Room to the near post.
"The season is not over," Edelman said. "We still have a lot to play for, and we're not going to give up."
The draw snapped a three-game losing streak for the Red Bulls (13-11-9) and moved them into a tie with FC Cincinnati for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings. The Crew (19-7-6) missed a chance to clinch the Supporters' Shield with the draw.
"It was a tough game," Crew coach Caleb Porter said. "New York is a good team, and they made it difficult for us. We're disappointed with the result, but we're still in a good position." The match was played in front of a sellout crowd of 25,000 at Red Bull Arena. The atmosphere was electric, and the fans played a big role in helping the Red Bulls earn the draw.
"The fans were amazing tonight," Red Bulls coach Gerhard Struber said. "They never gave up on us, and they helped us get this result."
The Red Bulls will return to action on Oct. 9 when they host the Philadelphia Union. The Crew will host FC Cincinnati on the same day.
