New York Red Bulls Eliminate Defending MLS Cup Champs Columbus Crew
Carlos Coronel’s heroics in penalty shootout send Red Bulls into Round Two
HARRISON, N.J. – The New York Red Bulls upset the defending MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew in the first round of the 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs on Sunday night at Red Bull Arena. The match finished a scoreless draw after 120 minutes of play, and the Red Bulls prevailed 3-1 in a penalty shootout.
Coronel saves the day
Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel was the hero of the night, saving three of the Crew’s four penalty kicks. Coronel made a diving save to his right to deny Lucas Zelarayan in the first round of the shootout, and he followed that up with a sprawling save to his left to stop Artur’s attempt in the second round. In the third round, Coronel guessed correctly again and made a diving save to his right to deny Derrick Etienne. His heroics in goal added to his excellent form during the playoffs.
Missed opportunities for Columbus
The Crew had several chances to win the game in regulation and extra time. Zelarayan hit the crossbar with a free kick in the first half, and Etienne had a goal ruled out for offside in the second half. In extra time, Zelarayan had another chance to win the game, but his shot was saved by Coronel.
Red Bulls advance to Round Two
With the win, the Red Bulls advance to the second round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, where they will face the Philadelphia Union. The match will be played on Sunday, October 23 at Red Bull Arena. The Red Bulls will be looking to reach the MLS Cup final for the first time since 2018.
