Cyclones cruise to 118-80 victory at Hilton Coliseum
Iowa State extended its nation-leading streak of consecutive season-opening victories to 30 on Monday night with a 118-80 rout of Chicago State at Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones, ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press preseason poll, shot 52.5% from the field and forced 20 turnovers.
Iowa State was led by senior guard Tyrese Hunter, who had 20 points and six assists.
Junior forward Jaren Holmes added 19 points, while senior guard Caleb Grill chipped in 17.
Chicago State was led by junior guard Jahsean Corbett, who had 21 points.
The Cougars shot just 39.1% from the field and were outrebounded by Iowa State 42-25.
Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger was pleased with his team's performance.
"I thought our guys came out with great energy and intensity," Otzelberger said. "We played together and shared the ball well."
Chicago State coach Gerald Gillion said his team was overmatched.
"Iowa State is a great team," Gillion said. "We knew we were going to have our hands full."
The Cyclones will return to action on Friday when they host Southeast Missouri State.
