Over 100 members of the sheltered housing scheme, staff and volunteers worked together to make the poignant tributes.

The impressive total was achieved in the run-up to Armistice Day on November 11 when poppies are traditionally worn to remember those who have given their lives in conflict.

Residents started making the poppies in September - cutting out red felt, carefully sewing on black centres and finishing them with a green stalk and leaf.

The poppies were then sold to staff, visitors and the local community, with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion. Each year, Oakwood Terrace supports the Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal by making and selling handmade poppies. The appeal is the Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign held every year in November in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday.

Money raised from the sale of the poppies goes towards supporting members of the Armed Forces community – serving men and women, veterans and their families.

Last year, the campaign raised £42.5 million in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Oakwood Terrace is one of 11 retirement housing schemes run by not-for-profit organisation Anchor Hanover in Northumberland.

Anchor Hanover provides housing and care to more than 53,000 older people across the UK.

The charity is committed to providing high-quality, affordable housing and care for older people, enabling them to live independently and with dignity.

Anchor Hanover staff and volunteers work hard to ensure that residents feel supported and connected to their local community.

The poppy-making project is just one example of the many ways that Anchor Hanover residents and staff give back to their communities.
