Pennsylvania election officials weighing in on challenges to 4,300 mail ballot applications
Officials have until Tuesday to rule on whether voters can fix errors on their mail ballots
Pennsylvania election officials are reviewing challenges to more than 4,300 mail ballot applications. The challenges, which come from both political parties, allege that the voters did not properly fill out their applications or provide the necessary identification.
The deadline for voters to return mail ballots is November 8. However, voters who have had their ballots challenged can still vote by going to their polling place on Election Day and providing proof of identification.
Counties with the most challenges
The counties with the most challenges are Philadelphia (1,000), Allegheny (800), and Montgomery (400).
Democratic and Republican officials are divided on the issue
Democratic officials have accused Republicans of trying to suppress the vote by challenging so many mail ballots. Republican officials have said that they are simply following the law and ensuring that the election is fair.
The courts may be asked to decide the issue
If election officials cannot resolve the challenges, the courts may be asked to decide whether the voters can fix the errors on their mail ballots. The courts could also order the counties to count the challenged ballots.
