Lady Griz top Montana Western in exhibition opener, 89-64
The University of Montana women's basketball team opened its exhibition season with an 89-64 win over Montana Western on Sunday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena.
The Lady Griz were led by senior guard Emma Stockholm, who scored 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Junior forward Carmen Gfeller added 17 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Gabi Harrington chipped in 16 points.
Montana Western was led by senior guard Kalli Durham, who scored 19 points. Junior forward Allie Hipsher added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Lady Griz show balance in exhibition win
The Lady Griz showed their balance in the win, with four players scoring in double figures. In addition to Stockholm, Gfeller, and Harrington, junior forward Taylor Goligoski added 12 points.
Montana Western also had four players in double figures, but the Lady Griz were able to pull away in the second half. Montana outscored Montana Western 46-32 in the second half, and the Lady Griz held the Bulldogs to just 35.7% shooting from the field.
Lady Griz defense forces 25 turnovers
The Lady Griz defense forced 25 turnovers, which led to 22 points. Montana Western also had 25 turnovers, but the Lady Griz were able to capitalize on their opportunities.
The Lady Griz also outrebounded Montana Western 43-32. Gfeller led the way with seven rebounds, while Harrington and Goligoski each had six rebounds.
Lady Griz open regular season on Friday
The Lady Griz will open their regular season on Friday, Nov. 11, when they host Northern Colorado at Dahlberg Arena. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
