The New York Red Bulls ended the Columbus Crew's MLS Cup defense on Sunday, winning 3-1 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.
Carlos Coronel stopped three Crew attempts in the shootout, while Lewis Morgan, John Tolkin and Cristian Cásseres Jr. converted their attempts for the Red Bulls, who advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The Crew took the lead in the 23rd minute when Lucas Zelarayán converted a penalty kick after Sean Nealis was fouled in the area by Coronel.
The Red Bulls equalized in the 51st minute when Caden Clark finished off a cross from Frankie Amaya.
The match went to extra time, but neither team could find a winning goal, sending the match to a shootout.
The Red Bulls will face the winner of Monday's match between the Philadelphia Union and FC Cincinnati in the semifinals.
