Single-engine plane lands on Hwy 85 near Cupertino
No injuries reported after small aircraft made emergency landing on busy California highway during rush hour
The single-engine Cessna 172 landed on Highway 85 near Cupertino around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol(CHP).
The pilot, who was the only person on board, was not injured. The plane was also undamaged.
The CHP said the pilot reported having engine trouble before making the emergency landing. The plane landed in the southbound lanes of the highway, just north of Stevens Creek Boulevard.
The plane was blocking the two right lanes of the highway, causing major traffic delays during the evening commute. The CHP said the plane was eventually moved to the shoulder of the highway, and all lanes were reopened by 7 p.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident.
Here are some additional details about the incident:
- The pilot is a 67-year-old man from San Jose.
- The plane is registered to a flight school in San Martin.
- The plane was flying from Reid-Hillview Airport in San Jose to Palo Alto Airport when the engine trouble occurred.
- The pilot was able to land the plane safely on the highway without causing any accidents.
This incident is a reminder of the importance of being prepared for emergencies when flying.
Pilots should always have a plan in place in case of engine failure or other emergencies. They should also be familiar with the terrain and potential landing sites in the area where they are flying.
The CHP commended the pilot for his quick thinking and safe landing. They also提醒d drivers to be aware of the possibility of aircraft emergencies and to be prepared to yield to aircraft that are making emergency landings.
