Snowy Conditions on the Menu for the Southwest
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the southwest, including the cities of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the southwest, including the cities of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces. The warning is in effect from 5 p.m. MST on Sunday, February 26th, to 5 p.m. MST on Monday, February 27th. During this time, heavy snow is expected to fall, with accumulations of 6 to 12 inches possible. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, causing blowing and drifting snow.
Travel is expected to be difficult or impossible due to the snow and wind.
The National Weather Service advises residents to avoid travel if possible. If you must travel, be sure to have a winter survival kit with you, including food, water, blankets, and a first-aid kit. Also, be sure to check road conditions before you head out, as many roads may be closed due to snow and ice.
Residents are also advised to take the following precautions:
- Stay indoors if possible.
- If you must go outside, dress warmly in layers.
- Cover your head, neck, and hands to protect yourself from the cold.
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Be aware of the signs of hypothermia and frostbite.
- If you start to feel cold, get inside and warm up immediately.
