Southeast Queensland smashed by hail in Friday afternoon storm

Hailstones as big as cricket balls have hit southeast Queensland, causing widespread damage to homes, cars and crops.

The storm hit around 5pm on Friday, with the hail lasting for about 30 minutes. The Bureau of Meteorology said the hail was caused by a supercell thunderstorm.

The storm hit the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich areas, with the worst damage reported in the suburb of Coomera. Homes were left with broken windows and roofs, while cars were dented and windscreens shattered.

Crops were also badly damaged, with some farmers reporting losing their entire crop.

The SES has received more than 1,000 calls for help, and crews are working to clear debris and help residents.

The storm is the latest in a series of severe weather events to hit Queensland in recent weeks. Earlier this month, flash flooding caused widespread damage in the state's north.

The Bureau of Meteorology is warning that more severe weather is possible in the coming days, with a severe thunderstorm warning in place for parts of southeast Queensland.
