A Record-Setting Night for the Spartans

The Michigan State men's basketball team opened their 2022-23 season with a dominant 101-40 victory over Wayne State University in an exhibition game at the Breslin Center on Thursday night. The Spartans, ranked No. 13 in the preseason AP Poll, showcased their depth and offensive firepower in the lopsided win. They hit a blistering 16-of-36 (44.4%) from three-point range and assisted on 25 of their 34 made field goals.

Spartans' Balanced Attack

Tyson Walker led the Spartans with 17 points and 7 assists, while Joey Hauser added 16 points. Six other Spartans scored at least 8 points, including Malik Hall, Jaden Akins, Trejuan Holloman, A.J. Hoggard, Carson Cooper, and Jaxon Kohler. The Spartans' defense was equally impressive, holding Wayne State to just 40 points on 28.6% shooting. They forced 17 turnovers and blocked 8 shots. "We played with great energy and effort tonight," said Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. "We shared the ball well and got a lot of good looks from beyond the arc. Our defense was also solid, and we held Wayne State to a low shooting percentage." The Spartans will open their regular season on Monday, November 7th, when they host Northern Arizona University at the Breslin Center.
