Thunderstorms Lash Queensland, Causing Widespread Damage
Severe Weather System Brings Hail, Tornados, and Flooding
Brisbane River Breaches Banks as Gustnado Touches Down
A powerful thunderstorm system has wreaked havoc across Queensland, unleashing a barrage of hail, tornados, and torrential rainfall. The severe weather event has caused widespread damage to property and infrastructure, with the Brisbane River bursting its banks and flooding low-lying areas.
The storm, which began developing on Thursday afternoon, has been described by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) as "unprecedented" in its intensity. Hailstones the size of golf balls have been reported in several areas, causing damage to cars, homes, and crops.
In addition to the hail, several tornados have also been confirmed by the BOM. One tornado touched down in the western suburbs of Brisbane, causing significant damage to buildings and power lines. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities.
The torrential rainfall has led to flash flooding across the region, with the Brisbane River breaching its banks and inundating low-lying areas. Hundreds of homes have been evacuated, and several roads have been closed due to flooding.
The BOM has issued a severe weather warning for much of southeastern Queensland, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The storm is expected to continue for several more hours, and further damage is likely.
Here are some safety tips to follow during a thunderstorm:
- Seek shelter in a sturdy building or underground.
- Stay away from windows and doors.
- Do not use electrical appliances.
- If you are outside, find a low-lying area and crouch down.

If you encounter a tornado, follow these steps:
