Up to 25 cm of snow in the forecast for southern Alberta
A weather system expected to bring up to 25 cm of snow is heading toward southern Alberta.
Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the region, which includes the cities of Calgary, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. The snow is expected to begin falling late Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected in the foothills and mountains, with up to 25 cm possible in some areas. The snow is likely to make travel difficult, and drivers are being advised to adjust their plans accordingly.
Here are some tips for driving in winter weather:
- Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.
- Increase your following distance to at least four seconds.
- Be aware of black ice, which can be difficult to see.
- If you start to skid, stay calm and steer into the skid.
- Avoid using cruise control.
In addition to the snowfall, the weather system is also expected to bring strong winds. Winds are expected to reach speeds of up to 70 km/h, which could cause power outages and damage to trees and buildings. Residents are being advised to secure any loose objects and to be prepared for power outages.
The snowfall is expected to taper off by Wednesday afternoon, but cold temperatures are expected to remain in the region. Environment Canada is urging residents to take precautions to stay warm, and to check on vulnerable neighbours and family members.
