Vaclav Havel: A Life of Leadership, Dissidence, and Hope
From Theater to Revolution
Vaclav Havel, the playwright and dissident who led Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution in 1989, was born in Prague in 1936. His father was a wealthy businessman, and his mother was a socialite. Havel studied drama at Charles University in Prague, where he became involved in the theater scene. In the 1960s, he became a leading figure in the Czech avant-garde theater movement, and his plays were often critical of the communist government.In 1968, after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, Havel was blacklisted and banned from working in the theater. He continued to write, however, and his plays were circulated underground. He also became involved in the dissident movement, and in 1977, he was one of the founders of Charter 77, a human rights organization.
Havel was arrested several times for his dissident activities, and he spent a total of five years in prison. In 1989, he was released from prison, and he played a leading role in the Velvet Revolution, which led to the overthrow of the communist government.
