The New York Red Bulls pulled off a major upset on Saturday night, defeating the Columbus Crew 3-1 on penalty kicks in the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.
The match was scoreless after 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of extra time, with both teams having their chances to win the game.
In the shootout, the Red Bulls converted all three of their attempts, while the Crew missed two of their four.
Daniel Royer's penalty kick in the fifth round proved to be the winner, sending the Red Bulls to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The win was a major upset, as the Crew were the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Red Bulls were the No. 7 seed.
It was also the first time that the Red Bulls had won a playoff game on the road since 2008.
The Red Bulls will now face the No. 3 seed Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The first leg of the series will be played in Philadelphia on Sunday, November 6.
The second leg will be played in Harrison, New Jersey on Sunday, November 13.
Red Bulls win on penalties
The Red Bulls won the shootout 3-1, with Daniel Royer, Luquinhas, and John Tolkin all converting their attempts.
Eloy Room saved two of the Crew's four attempts, from Lucas Zelarayan and Derrick Etienne.

With the win, the Red Bulls advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they will face the No. 3 seed Philadelphia Union.

Crew eliminated from playoffs
The Crew were eliminated from the playoffs with the loss, ending their season.
The Crew were the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, but they were upset by the No. 7 seed Red Bulls.
It was the first time that the Crew had lost a playoff game at home since 2015.
