Francesco Merloni was born in 1892 in Fabriano, Italy. He was a son of Aristide Merloni, a craftsman who specialized in the production of scales. Francesco inherited his father's passion for precision and engineering, and he showed an early aptitude for business.

In 1930, Merloni founded the Indesit Company, which initially produced enamelware and pans. The company gradually expanded its product line to include washing machines, refrigerators, and other home appliances.
