Dusty May takes over for Juwan Howard
The Michigan Wolverines men's basketball program has a new head coach. Dusty May, the former head coach at Wright State University, was hired on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, to replace Juwan Howard, who was fired on March 14, 2023, after five seasons at the helm.
May, 48, has a 179-101 record in nine seasons as a head coach at Wright State, including a 97-47 mark in Horizon League play. He led the Raiders to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 berth in 2018. He twice earned Horizon League Coach of the Year honors.
May played collegiately at Northern Kentucky University, where he was a two-time All-American and helped lead the Norse to the 2000 NCAA Division II national championship.
May is known as a defensive-minded coach who emphasizes player development. He has a reputation for getting the most out of his players and for building strong relationships with them.
May will be introduced to the media on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at a press conference at Crisler Center. He will inherit a Michigan program that finished 17-14 overall and 11-9 in the Big Ten this past season.
May's contract details
May's contract is for six years and is worth $3 million per year. He will also receive a $500,000 signing bonus and a $250,000 annual performance bonus.
