Late Mitrovic header deals blow to Bees’ Euro hopes

Fulham moved a step closer to securing their Premier League status for another season as Aleksandar Mitrovic’s stoppage-time header earned them a dramatic 3-2 win at Brentford on Saturday.

The result leaves the Bees’ hopes of qualifying for Europe hanging by a thread, while Fulham are now nine points clear of the relegation zone with just four games remaining.

Brentford had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half through goals from Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo, but Fulham hit back after the break through Mitrovic’s penalty and a strike from Fabio Carvalho.

The Serbian striker then completed the comeback in the dying seconds with a powerful header from a Kenny Tete cross. The defeat was a cruel blow for Brentford, who had been in impressive form in recent weeks and were looking to qualify for Europe for the first time in their history.

They remain in 11th place, but are now six points behind seventh-placed West Ham with just four games to go. Fulham, meanwhile, are now in 17th place and look set to avoid the drop.

Mitrovic’s late goal was a timely reminder of his importance to Fulham. The Serbian has now scored 11 goals in his last 10 Premier League games and is the club’s leading scorer this season with 24 goals in all competitions.

He will be key to Fulham’s hopes of staying in the Premier League and could also play a role in their bid to win the FA Cup. The Cottagers face Manchester City in the semi-finals of the competition later this month.
