Cyclones blow out overmatched ESU Hornets in exhibition
AMES, Iowa - Ashley Joens never touched the court Friday night at Hilton Coliseum, but the Iowa State women's basketball team still topped the century mark for the second consecutive game.
ISU rolled past Division II Emporia State in an exhibition game in front of 4,256 fans, 103-45. Four Cyclones scored in double figures, led by transfer Emily Ryan's 17 points.
ISU (2-0) plays host to Northern Iowa in another exhibition game on Monday night at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum before opening the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 8 against Chicago State.
A slow start for the Cyclones
The Cyclones managed just 14 points in the first quarter, shooting 6-of-17 from the field.
That output was about what ISU coach Bill Fennelly expected against an overmatched opponent.
"That's what happens in exhibition games," Fennelly said. "I don't think either team has a great feel for the game."
But the Cyclones quickly found their rhythm
ISU scored 30 points in the second quarter, with Ryan scoring nine of her points in the period.
The Cyclones also found their range from behond the arc, hitting four 3-pointers in the second quarter.
ISU led 44-19 at halftime.
Cyclones stars shine
Ryan wasn't the only Cyclone to impress in the win.
Sophomore guard Denae Fritz scored 13 points
Junior forward Lexi Donarski added 12 points.
ISU's bench also contributed, with 37 points.
ISU's defense was just as impressive
The Cyclones forced 23 turnovers and held Emporia State to 27.7 percent shooting from the field.
ISU also blocked seven shots.
"I thought we did a good job of guarding the 3-point line," Fennelly said. "I thought we did a good job of guarding the paint.
