Women's Basketball Opens Season Monday
Excitement abounds as the Lady Lions prepare for their season opener
EMPORIA, Kan. (Sept. 23, 2023) - The Emporia State women's basketball team will open its 2023-24 season on Monday, Nov. 7, at home against Washburn. The Lady Lions are coming off a 20-9 season in which they finished second in the MIAA regular season and advanced to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament.
Head coach Toby Wynn is excited about the upcoming season. "We have a lot of talent and experience on this team," Wynn said. "We're looking to make a run at the MIAA championship this year."
The Lady Lions return four starters from last year's team, including All-MIAA selection Jaci Mueller. Mueller, a senior guard, averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season. Other returning starters include senior guard Emilee Karst, junior forward Jada Burton and sophomore guard Camryn Proctor.
In addition to their returning players, the Lady Lions have also added some talented newcomers. Freshman guard Kennedy Nicholson was a three-time all-state selection in high school, and freshman forward Aliyah Myers was a two-time all-state selection.
The Lady Lions will open their season with a pair of home games against Washburn and Central Oklahoma. They will then hit the road for a pair of games against Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State. The Lady Lions will open their MIAA schedule on Dec. 1 at home against Fort Hays State.
The Lady Lions are ranked No. 15 in the WBCA preseason poll. They are one of three MIAA teams ranked in the top 25, joining Washburn (No. 14) and Missouri Western (No. 22).
